Who we are and what we do?
The Center for Sustainable Management of Tourism, Sport & Events (CESMATSE) is an autotelic research unit within the EUC School of Business Administration devoted to the advancement of scholarship and praxis on the sustainable management of tourism, sport and events sectors in order to enable their subsequent contribution to the sustainable development of host communities.
In particular, at CESMATSE we seek to advance knowledge on the synergistic sustainable management of tourist, sport and event organizations. One of the main problems constraining the sustainability potential of these organizations is the lack of understanding and of leveraging their interdependencies as well as common interests. For this reason, CESMATSE has adopted a holistic interdisciplinary approach that does not focus merely on each sector per se but extends the focus on sustainability across the range of tourist, sports and events products and activities. In doing so, innovative research is conducted to generate the grounding theoretical context for applying to the industry new sustainable management models and inform as well as train/educate professionals about the pertinent best practices.
Background
Sustainability is a critical matter in contemporary management. Research attention is needed in order to find the best means to achieve sustainable outcomes for organizations, help them contribute to a society’s well-being, and enhance thus their community role. In other words, the emphasis on sustainability can help build capacity for adopting and implementing sustainable practices that meet the triple bottom line of economic efficiency, social equity and ecological integrity. In the sectors of tourism, sport and events, the implementation of sustainable practices is imperative, since from their very nature, the activities and outcomes of these industries have a range of socio-cultural, environmental, and economic ramifications. However, the innate fragmentation of these industries often hinders the adoption or effective implementation of sustainable practices. A common holistic approach on tourism, sport and events can help establish the appropriate synergies and mechanisms for the sustainable management of these sectors.
Rationale
The rationale that permeates the operation of the Center is twofold:
(a) First, the Center aims to provide a common space for advancement of scholarship in the areas of tourism, sport and events. For this reason, an interdisciplinary approach is adopted by the Center in investigating these distinct but interrelated lines of inquiry in order to derive sound implications for the sustainable management of tourist, sport and event organizations. The Center conducts and disseminates cutting-edge research in high quality outlets such as international conferences, refereed journals and applied research projects.
(b) Second, the Center aims to offer consultancy to local organizations by providing innovative marketing and management solutions to business, community and government organizations dedicated to the delivery of tourism, hospitality, sport, event, and leisure services and products. The Center is also able to educate and train executives, and function as a think tank and informational resource for those involved in the tourism, hospitality, sport and event industries.
